Twenty one things you did not know you did

You are not resting your hand near your face. You are properly leaning on it. Your cheek gives where your palm pushes into it, and that takes weight, and weight takes time. You had been sitting there a while before anyone thought to take a picture.

Your other hand is doing nothing at all. Fingers half closed, wrist soft, just hanging there. Nobody arranges a hand like that. It is the part of you that had already forgotten a camera was out.

The bands on that wrist have slid all the way down to the bottom of your hand. That only happens when an arm has been hanging loose for a long time. You were not holding a pose. You were just sitting.

There is nothing in either hand. No phone, no bag, nothing to drink. You went somewhere with nothing to do and nothing to hold, which is harder than people admit.

You sat down on the ground. In good clothes. Next to water. Most people stay standing for exactly that reason, and I do not think it crossed your mind for a second.

Whoever took this was down at your level, not standing over you. The far bank of the water sits level with your eyes, so they were sitting on the ground too. Whoever it was, you were comfortable with them.

There is not one ripple on that water. The trees are reflected in it perfectly, and that only happens when nothing at all is moving. That is not a place you end up in by accident. You went looking for it.

Nobody else is in the frame, and nobody is in the background either. Whatever that afternoon was, it was not a group plan.

The dot on your forehead is black. Not red. So is every band on both arms. Four separate things you picked up that morning and every one of them landed on the same colour, and I would bet you never thought about it once.

Nothing gold anywhere. Nothing at your neck either. Every time there was a choice between more and less, you quietly took less.

The wide band is up near your elbow and the thin ones are down at your wrist. You split them across your arm instead of stacking them in one place. Almost nobody does that.

Your nails are short and completely bare. Whatever that day was for, it did not involve getting ready.

Your hair is loose. Nothing tied, nothing holding it. You went to sit next to open water with your hair down, which means you were not planning to fight anything that afternoon.

Your shoulders are dropped. Not pulled back, not squared up for the photo. Down, where shoulders go when somebody has stopped bracing.

Your head tilts one way. Your hair falls the same way. So does everything you are wearing. The whole picture leans in one direction and you are the reason it does.

The light is coming from one side, and you are leaning into the darker side of your own face, so the camera got the lit half. You were not trying to do that and it worked anyway.

You are not in the middle of the picture. You are off to one side with a lot of empty space beside you, and you clearly never asked to be moved into the centre.

You are looking straight down the lens while your body is turned away from it. You were paying attention to the person holding the camera, not to the photograph.

There is no watch on either wrist. Wherever that was, you had not planned on knowing what time it got to be.

Every one of these is a decision you made before the day properly started and then forgot about immediately. Not one of them was made for anybody to see.
